Instructions

1. Elf on the shelf

#BluHacks no.39

We couldn't not begin with the original 'Elf on the shelf' idea. But, why not get more creative with your mischievous little friend and set them up doing something more fun than just lounging around? We're using a blob of Blu Tack to help our Elf go fishing from our shelves - we wonder what they'll catch…

You can add some character to your seated Elf by propping them up with a mini book as if they’re reading, balancing a toy camera to “snap” photos, or holding a tiny mug as though they’re enjoying hot chocolate. You could even have them peeking over the edge, dangling their legs cheekily, or sitting cross-legged in a meditative pose. With just a little imagination, even a simple shelf seat can feel full of mischief.

2. Elf writes a note

#BluHacks no.140

Get your Elf involved in some stationery shenanigans by having them leave a handwritten message. Start simple with a cheeky “Naughty or Nice?” scribbled on a card or sticky note, held in place with a dab of Blu Tack.

You could also set them up signing Christmas cards, writing a to-do list for Santa, doodling on a scrap of paper, or even pretending to mark homework with big red ticks and crosses.
For extra fun, have your Elf scatter pens, pencils, or highlighters around as if they’ve been busy at work all night. It’s a playful way to add a personal touch to the morning and maybe even an excuse to sneak in a festive reminder or two.

3. Bansiter slide

#BluHacks no.216

Ready, set… slide! Perched at the top of the stair banister, your Elf can look like it’s about to zoom down and surprise the kids. A little Blu Tack will keep them safe in place. You can get creative here too - sit the Elf inside a toy car, sled, or even a cardboard “toboggan” made from an empty cereal box for a speedy effect.

For extra mischief, scatter a few other toys or stuffed animals along the banister as if they’ve joined in on the fun, or place the Elf halfway down, mid-slide, for that caught-in-action look. However you set it up, it’s a playful way to turn your staircase into a mini adventure park - an action-packed, naughty Elf idea.

4. Sign-wielding Elf

#BluHacks no.968

Sometimes your Elf has something important to say. Craft a mini sign from card or paper, pop it into their hands, and secure it with a blob of Blu Tack. The message could be sweet like “Believe in the magic” or cheeky, such as “No peeking at presents”.

Use the signs to drop hints, share jokes, or even give silly instructions for the day such as “Talk like an Elf until lunch”. Place your sign-wielding Elf by the breakfast table, above the fireplace, or even by the front door to set the tone for the day. It’s an easy way to make your Elf’s voice part of the fun and bring them to life with the little ones.

5. Decorating Elf

#BluHacks no.125

Bring some extra sparkle to your home with an Elf who’s taken charge of the festive decor. Imagine entering the kitchen to find cupboard doors covered in shiny craft bows, paper snowflakes, or colourful tinsel - clearly the work of your busy little helper. You can also have your Elf drape fairy lights around a chair, stack baubles in a fruit bowl, or tape festive cut-outs across the fridge.

For a crafty twist, set them up with scissors, paper scraps, and markers, as though they’ve been making the decorations themselves. Whether it’s bows in surprising places or a mini festive makeover of a whole room, your Elf will leave the house looking merrier than ever.

6. Elf on a zip wire

#BluHacks no.304

Probably our go-to, funny elf on the shelf idea: turn your living room into an adventure zone with a DIY zip wire! Stretch a piece of yarn or string from the mantelpiece to a lower spot, then hook your Elf onto a candy cane as their handlebar for the ultimate festive ride. Secure them with a dab of tack so they look mid-flight, zooming towards their landing spot.

Easily add to the scene by placing toy friends waiting at the bottom with a “Welcome party,” or set up multiple strings for a whole zip-line course across the room. It’s all about capturing their playful, daredevil side!

7. Climbing the Christmas lights

#BluHacks no.403

Your Elf doesn’t always have to be zipping through the air - sometimes they’re busy scaling new heights. Wrap them around a strand of Christmas lights so it looks like they’re climbing up towards the tree topper or hanging halfway like a daring mountaineer. A little Blu Tack will keep them steady while they “climb.”

You could also position your Elf swinging from a single bulb, dangling upside down like a circus acrobat, or racing a toy figure up the same string of lights.

For extra mischief, tangle them in the wires with a cheeky expression, as if they’ve gotten themselves stuck mid-climb. Whether they’re scaling, swinging, or tangled in the twinkle, it’s a scene that shines bright with festive fun.

8. Hiding in plain sight

#BluHacks no.509

Not every Elf hiding spot needs to be tricky - sometimes the fun is in how obvious they are! Try sitting your Elf right in the middle of the coffee table, perched cheekily on top of the kitchen oven or cupboard doors, or leaning by the bathroom sink ready to “help” with the morning routine. These easy-to-spot setups make the game just as magical for little ones who love the thrill of discovering their Elf straight away, while still giving older kids a chuckle at how bold their festive friend can be.
