How to use
For best results, ensure surfaces are clean, dry and free from dust, dirt, rust, oil and grease. Cut the nozzle to the desired bead size and apply a continuous, even 2–4 mm bead. Allow the sealant to form a skin without repositioning, then leave to cure fully.
Application steps:
- Clean and prepare the surfaces before application.
- Cut the nozzle to the desired bead size and attach it to the tube.
- Apply a continuous, uniform 2–4 mm bead with steady pressure.
- Smooth and shape the sealant if required using a spatula dipped in mild detergent.
- Allow the sealant to cure. It becomes tack-free within approximately 8–15 minutes and typically reaches full cure within 24 hours.
- Remove uncured excess with a suitable solvent. Fully cured sealant can be removed mechanically.
- For safety, use in a well-ventilated area and wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves and safety glasses.
Frequently asked questions
How much heat can Bostik Gasket Sealant withstand?
Once fully cured, Bostik Gasket Sealant maintains its flexibility and sealing performance up to **260°C under continuous exposure and up to 317°C under intermittent exposure**. **Bostik Gasket Sealant RED is specifically designed for high-temperature applications and can withstand intermittent temperatures of up to 317°C.
Is Bostik Gasket Sealant suitable for automotive applications?
Yes. It is formulated as a high-temperature gasket maker and automotive sealant and is suitable for applications involving oil, water, automotive fluids, vibration and thermal cycling.
What is Bostik Gasket Sealant used for?
Bostik Gasket Sealant is an RTV silicone sealant and formed-in-place gasket (FIPG) material designed for sealing and bonding applications. It can be used for flanged joints in transmissions, compressors, pumps and other equipment, as well as valve and timing covers, crankcases, radiators and thermostats.
Can Bostik Gasket Sealant be used on vertical surfaces?
Yes. Its non-slump formulation makes it suitable for application on vertical and overhead surfaces.
How do I apply Bostik Gasket Sealant?
Ensure the surfaces are clean and dry, cut the nozzle to the desired bead size and apply a continuous, even 2–4 mm bead. Avoid repositioning the sealant once the skin has formed and allow it to cure fully.
How long does Bostik Gasket Sealant take to cure?
Under standard curing conditions, the sealant develops a tack-free surface within approximately 8–15 minutes and typically reaches full cure within 24 hours. Actual curing time depends on temperature and humidity.
Can Bostik Gasket Sealant withstand vibration?
Yes. The cured silicone rubber provides resistance to vibration and thermal cycling, helping maintain sealing performance under demanding conditions.
Can excess Bostik Gasket Sealant be removed?
Yes. Uncured excess can be removed with a cloth dampened with mineral turpentine or an appropriate solvent. Once fully cured, the sealant can be removed mechanically by trimming.
How should Bostik Gasket Sealant be stored?
Store the product in its original, unopened packaging in cool, dry conditions. The stated shelf life is 18 months. Once opened, reseal the package immediately after use to minimise moisture exposure.
How should you prepare surfaces before applying gasket sealant?
Before applying Bostik Gasket Sealant, make sure all surfaces are clean, dry and free from grease, oil, dust, rust and other contaminants.
Remove any old gasket material or loose residue and ensure the mating surfaces are in good condition before applying the sealant. Proper surface preparation helps achieve the best sealing performance and adhesion.
Is gasket sealant resistant to oil and automotive fluids?
Yes, Bostik Gasket Sealant is resistant to oil, water and automotive fluids. It is designed for sealing applications where components may be exposed to fluid contact, vibration and changing operating conditions.
Bostik Gasket Sealant can be used as a formed-in-place gasket for applications such as transmissions, compressors, pumps and other mechanical equipment that require durable sealing performance.
What colours does Bostik Gasket Sealant come in?
Bostik Gasket Sealant is available in Red, Black and Grey variants.
How do I prepare the surfaces to be glued?
- Ensure surfaces are clean; dry free from grease and loose materials.
- For best results, surfaces and surroundings should be pleasantly warm.
- Take out a sheet of dots from the wallet.
- Fold and then tear off, along the perforations, to remove as many dots as required.
What is the shelf life of the adhesive I have bought and where can I store it?
The shelf life of adhesives varies from product to product, but typically ranges between one and two years from the date of manufacture when unopened and stored correctly in dry conditions - usually between +5°C and +25°C. Once opened, the life of the product will be more limited – this is dictated by variables including the type of adhesive, how it is stored, and how much adhesive is left unused. For more information, refer to the product’s Technical Data Sheet.
