How to protect metal from rust

What can you put on metal so that it doesn't rust?

If you live near the coast or in a place where it rains frequently, you will know all about the problem of rusting metal. Metal plus salt and water equals rusty metal!

But all it takes is a humid environment for bare metal to become rusty metal over time. Things such as bicycle chains and hand saws will begin to exhibit corrosion unless they are maintained regularly.

What is the best metal coating to prevent rust?

Prevention is the best strategy. The best way to deal with rusty metal is to make sure rust doesn't form in the first place.

Whereas coating metal with paint (or zinc-plating or galvanising it) can provide extended protection against rust, not all steel items can be protected like that. For example, if you were to paint a hand saw or bicycle chain, all it would take is one use of the saw, and one bike ride, to rip off the paint.

So, your saw hanging on the wall over your workbench is beginning to look mottled with rust. You haven’t been on your bike for several months, and you can see some brown spots on the chain. What can you do?

How can you keep steel from rusting without paint? Can you spray something onto metal to prevent it rusting?

Instructions

Step 1: Shake the can vigorously

As is the case for most products that come in cans, you’ll need to shake it well before using it.

Step 2: Apply the spray thinly and selectively

Spray directly onto the metal.

If you are using the Multi-Use Spray to protect a bicycle chain, try doing it this way: direct the spray onto the chain links where they are in contact with the chainring and then lift the bicycle’s rear wheel and spin the pedals to allow the chain to make several revolutions. By repeating this process several times – spray, lift wheel, spin pedals – you will spread the product over the entire chain while minimising the amount of overspray that misses the chain and lands on the floor.

Note: the 300ml can has two options: a standard head with a directed nozzle, or a 360-degree Cobra Head. The Cobra Head has a wide spray option and a precise application nozzle, and it can be used upside down.

The 150ml can comes with the standard head only.

Step 3: Clean with a cloth

Wipe up any excess spray with a cloth. If you are spraying a hand saw, simply wipe both sides of the blade to ensure the product covers the whole surface.

Job done! Metal protected. Rust kept at bay.
